Chapter Nineteen

Aiden was sitting behind his desk in his office staring at the wall opposite. He had just finished seeing his first client of the day and the meeting had been a disaster. Aiden’s mind had been elsewhere. He just couldn’t concentrate. The client had rattled on, and Aiden had just nodded as the words flowed over him.

He felt more troubled now than he had before he had seen Amber. He hadn’t known that David had gone to see her and didn’t know exactly what he had told her. He wished David had never come to his office that day. David knew there was more than Aiden was telling. Shame burnt at his skin. He’d told David the bit before and the bit after and glossed over the details of the in-between. It was easy to do as they were all stoned but could David have worked it out? He should have told the police that he had been a witness. It was stupid to have kept quiet. They would know by now and be wondering why he didn’t say anything. It had just taken him by surprise. He hadn’t expected them to make the connection that quickly.

Aiden’s secretary knocked at the door and poked her head round.

‘Detectives Meadows and Edris to see you,’ she said.

The two men stepped into the room. Aiden felt a coldness creep over him. He hadn’t expected them to come again so soon. Have they spoken to Amber? was his first thought.

‘Oh.’ Aiden stood. ‘I wasn’t expecting you and I have a client coming in shortly.’

‘We won’t take up much of your time,’ Meadows said.

‘You’ve got about ten minutes before your next appointment,’ his secretary said and smiled. ‘I can give them a cup of tea or coffee if you need longer.’

Aiden felt like slapping her. It wouldn’t surprise him if she listened behind the door once it was closed. ‘That would be great, thank you, Fiona.’ He forced a smile. ‘Please take a seat.’ His legs felt weak, and he was grateful to sink back down into his chair.

Aiden looked at Meadows. He had thick dark wavy hair and bright green eyes. Although he had a friendly face his gaze made Aiden feel uncomfortable. He felt the slightest gesture would give him away. His eyes flicked to Edris who had taken out a notebook and pen.

‘What can I do for you?’ Aiden asked.

‘When my sergeant came to talk to you, you didn’t mention that you had been a witness in the Ruth Williams case. We just need to go over the statement you made back then,’ Meadows said.

‘Oh, right. Well, he didn’t ask me. It did cross my mind after he had left but I didn’t think it was important. He certainly didn’t mention that it was connected to David’s death.’

‘We are looking at all aspects of David’s life and during our enquiries the murder of Ruth Williams came up on more than one occasion. We now believe that the two cases are connected.’

‘In what way?’ Aiden asked.
